PENPA
TSERING'S BIOGRAPHY
Penpa
Tsering was born in a small town near Lhasa on August 1, 1969. At
the age of twelve he became an apprentice to a master wood carver who
created altars and other religious pieces for various Buddhist monasteries
and temples in the Lhasa area. Penpa was soon selling his work directly
to individuals and monasteries, including pieces for the Potala Palace,
the former winter palace of the Dalai Lama, and currently a major Tibetan
Buddhist temple, and the Somyay Monastery, one of Tibet's oldest and largest
monasteries.
Penpa
lived in Daramsala, India for two years where he continued to practice
and refine his artistry, creating pieces for Norpolinka Palace, a center
of education, religion and art created to preserve the Tibetan culture.
On
December 4, 1992, Penpa immigrated to the United States, staying in the home
of his American sponsor in San Francisco. Penpa continues to live in the
Bay Area, where he creates his art pieces for individuals and religious centers.
